A brief history of Audi
Audi’s story began in 1989 when August Horsch, a German engineer and automobile pioneer founded Horch & Cie. in Cologne, Germany. This was where he helped build his very first car. When conflict arose, he left Horch & Cie and formed a second car company. Horch could not take the same name as his previous company, so he chose something a little more original. “Horch” in German means “to listen” and so he translated that into the Latin word which is, of course, “Audi”. Audiwerke GmbH was born. The new company became famous with a winning streak at the International Austrian Alpine Run from 1911 to 1914. Later the company merged with Horch and three other companies: DKW, Wanderer and NSU. Today we, and the rest of the world, know it better as Audi.
