More About The BMW 1 Series

The BMW 1 Series has been in production since 2004 and is BMW's subcompact executive car (C-segment). It was positioned as BMW's entry-level model when it succeeded the somewhat disappointing BMW 3 Series Compact. It is currently in its third generation. The 'Baby Beemer' shared most of its components with its 3 Series sibling (including axle configuration and suspension) and was launched to compete with the Audi A3, Volkswagen Golf, Volvo C30, Mercedes-Benz B-Class in the small luxury car sector.

For the first two generations, the 1 Series featured a rear-wheel-drive layout. In 2012, all-wheel drive was introduced as an option. In the third generation (2019), it switched to a front-wheel-drive layout, while keeping the all-wheel-drive option. Before 2014, the range featured coupé and convertible models. (These are now marketed separately as the 2 Series.)

Part of the 1 Series' appeal is its range of engines. There is a 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine borrowed from the Mini Cooper, which gives the 118i smooth and economical performance. The 120i and 125i have more power and speed while the diesel options - when paired with the 8-speed auto gearbox - are a delight.

BMW parts and servicing are rather pricey but if you are lucky enough to find a pre-owned BMW 1 series for sale that is still covered by its maintenance plan, you have struck the jackpot.
