Topless Audi models are undoubtedly laden with sex appeal. More so when their high-performance division lends a hand. The S3 Cabriolet promises to offer the same thrill as its hatchback sibling. But with the added fun of having the wind ruin your hairdo at 250km/h.
According to Audi, the drive will be a “fascinating experience” and with 221kW on tap that claim is hard to dispute. Power is sent to all four wheels in typical hot Audi fashion. And they say buyers can expect a 0-100km/h time of 5.4 seconds. Efficient tricks like a stop-start system help achieve a fuel consumption figure of 7.1l/100km.
The fabric top is available in three colours and can be shed or fastened automatically in 18 seconds at speeds up to 50km/h. Chopping the roof usually results in liberal use of body reinforcement to compensate for a loss of rigidity. This adds more weight into the mix. Audi tried to counter this by using lightweight magnesium and aluminium.
It has the same striking accoutrements as its fixed-roof alternative. Meaner wheels, four pipes at the rear, muscular bumpers and an abundance of “S” badges. Sport seats with various upholstery choices are on offer. It has stainless steel pedals, more “S” logos on the sills and you can also specify a flat-bottomed steering wheel. When it goes on sale in Europe it’ll cost 48 500 Euros. That translates into a whopping R728 823. The S3 Cabriolet has yet to be confirmed for our market.
