Since the brand’s introduction into the South Africa market in 2004, Mahindra has grown exponentially. Its Rise marketing strategy (to challenge the status quo and encourage positive change), together with a value for money product line, echoes through its growing number of sales, and after-sales services. The slogan associated with the Pik-Up – “always up for a challenge” – is a catchphrase brought to life during a recent test drive with newly-appointed Sales Manager, Quentin Damster.

Tough has never looked this good

When confronted by this Workhorse, its overwhelming masculinity is somewhat startling. The tough front grille has staunch chrome inserts, dual projector headlamps, an integrated air-scoop in the bonnet and wicked wraparound bumpers. Just the thought of entering this friendly beast inspired a feeling of power and tenacity within me.

A balance of good looks and intelligence

The Pik-Up’s interior is beautifully crafted and luxurious. The S6 4×2 single cab derivative comes standard with AM/FM radio, USB and AUX. This offers a refreshing perspective, as bakkies are generally quite plain on the inside. Stepping up the game is the S6 4×4 double cab which includes Bluetooth connectivity.

Where the entry level has a fan, the S6 4×2 single cab has integrated air-conditioning – an added element of comfort, making your new favourite bakkie the perfect road-trip companion for those seeking adventure. Safety features included in the Pik-Up are driver and passenger airbags, ABS, auto-locking doors, automatic headlamp and seat belt reminders, to name a few. Included, a digital immobiliser and micro hybrid start/stop function.

A strong, practical and reliable engine

The 2.2-litre, 4-cylinder mHawk turbo-diesel engine was strikingly evident in the drive. Simply saying it has power is almost an understatement! With highway traffic being no match for the six-speed gear box, the engine approached the challenge head-on and reacted graciously.

This fighting machine was built to withstand harsh testing conditions – demonstrated by the 103kW engine’s impressive 1195kg payload and braked towing ability of 2500kg. Though the engine has a lot of power, it still has a surprisingly decent fuel efficiency of 18km/liter.

Mahindra offers a 4 year/120 000km warranty, 5 year/90 000km service plan and 4 year/120 000km roadside assistance.
