Volkswagen – considered as one of the top automotive brands in South Africa and known for their advanced and energetic vehicles. Thus, it comes as no surprise that the Up! has already sold over 4 000 units in South Africa since its launch in 2015. Filled with excitement to get behind the wheel, Sales Executive, Fadwa Albertus shares in my enthusiasm as we approach the Up!

Exterior

This chic little city wanderer has 14-inch steel wheels and a ground clearance of 144mm. The LED daytime running lights, stylish bumper, front trim strips and a sleek bonnet make up one energetic little hatch. The front and rear headlights are distinctly sharp and sporty and are rounded off by body coloured mirrors and handles. The exterior of the Up! is a beautifully fashioned, cost effective hatch.

Interior

The interior suits Volkswagen’s dynamic look. In-mold labeling was used for the printed surfaces on the dashboard, which has a bold ‘Black Cube’ design. The Move Up! derivative has a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment system which includes Bluetooth for cellphone, audio Aux and USB connection, so you can pick your tunes or speak on your phone without losing driving focus.

The stylish appearance is sported by Fusion cloth upholstery and chrome trimmed door handles. I honestly felt like I was in an aristocratic crossover, rather than a little hatch. A variable boot floor makes loading easy and convenient.

The Drive

The steering wheel is smooth and has speed-sensitive power-assisted steering, so the faster you drive, the better the handling – which is a big plus considering the size of the hatch. The multifunctional steering wheel and gear knob has soft leather upholstery – making it feel even more premium as you sit in the driver’s seat. The 1-litre engine really moves once provoked and has a swift 5-speed manual transmission.

As Fadwa and I drove around, I noticed how easily the gears and clutch operate. When faced with an uphill, I felt secure in take-off, knowing that the car has hill hold. Other convenient features include tyre pressure loss indicators, convenient so you aren’t suddenly faced with an unexpected flat.

Safety features include driver and front passenger airbags, ABS, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Isofix child seat preparation, Electronic Differential Lock (EDL), Hydraulic Brake Assist (HBA) and traction control.
