I recently had the absolute pleasure of taking a top-of-the-range Nissan X-Trail for a spin from Nissan The Glen. It has a 2.5 Tekna 4-wheel drive engine and an incredibly smooth CVT transmission. With the Nissan approved accessories included, this poised seven-seater crossover is the perfect vehicle for families and/or travelers. Sitting in the car with me is sales executive Michael Tröger, who proudly admits that this is his favourite Nissan model.

Exterior

The exterior of the X-Trail is quite big. It has 19” alloy wheels and a ground clearance of 209mm. Arrow-shaped day-time running lights are conveniently located to ensure you are always seen. Curves on the bonnet and on the doors of the vehicle gives this crossover its rugged edge – which is also sported by the V-shaped grille. There are four cameras located around the vehicle – the front which allows you to know exactly how far you can pull up, one on each side-mirror and one on the boot for optimal reversing.

Interior and Steering

As a relatively short female, the electronic seat adjustments sit well with me as I can choose how high or close I’d like to sit in the driver’s seat. The premium, smooth leather steering wheel is also adjustable and has a convenient D-shape curve at the bottom, allowing enough leg room even if you’re lodged up against it.

For those who often travel long distances, the X-Trail offers co-driving features such as Intelligent Automatic Headlights, Intelligent Emergency Braking, Intelligent Forward Collision warning and Intelligent Lane Departure Intervention.

Intelligent Automatic Headlights are activated as soon as the system picks up you need them. Intelligent Emergency Braking monitors detect objects in your way to avoid you as the driver from bumping into anything out of sight. You never need to worry about your blind spot as your co-driver has eyes where you don’t! A warning light flashes on your side mirrors every time an object is picked up in your diagonal blind spot. You can feel secure knowing your vehicle has Intelligent Mobility.

This is the perfect vehicle if you consider South African roads. Features such as the Intelligent Ride Control system applies brakes to prevent instability over bumpy roads. Another impressive feature in this derivative is the Nissan X-Trail All-Mode 4×4-i. This feature allows the vehicle to perform on and off road. A selection dial allows you to choose between 2-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive or Auto Mode. Selecting Auto Mode means that the vehicle monitors the road conditions and adjusts the balance of the wheels accordingly.

The seats are double-stitched black leather and extremely comfortable. The second row has a 60/40 split and the third row has a 50/50 split, giving you more space to fill the vehicle with family, friends or cargo. The rear doors have an opening of almost 80˚; which gives you, your family member and friends ample space to get into the vehicle. The leg room in the first, second and third row is testimonial to the space this vehicle offers.

In addition to the smart technology in this vehicle, the actual drive is something to boast about. Not only does it climb a mountain as if it’s on a straight road, you can barely hear and feel it working! Every lump and bump barely noticeable and the CVT transmission makes the ride even smoother!

Other specifications of this derivative include a sunroof, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display, multifunctional steering wheel, six bottle holders and so much more! Service and warranty includes a 3 year/90 000km service plan and a 6 year/150 000km warranty.
