Imperial Mitsubishi Motors has a rich 40-year heritage in South Africa. With a reputation of producing adventurous, reliable and luxurious motorcars, the Mitsubishi brand take its drivers on the most memorable journeys imaginable. Sales Executive, Donovan Pretorius and I recently took the Athlete for a test drive in and around the East Rand area.

The Mitsubishi Triton Athlete is a special edition model which is based on a Triton Adventure X-development. Its name is fitting as it looks and feels very athletic with sporty stickers and trimmings. The exterior and interior have been decorated with two-toned orange and black body kits. The modern honeycomb mesh grille and black mouldings contribute to its sleek and sexy appeal. Adding to the anticipation of the interior, are the front bumper and black diamond-cut 17-inch alloy wheels.

Like the Triton Adventure X-development, the Athlete has Bi-xenon HID headlamps and daytime running lamps which add to its tough demeanour. Because of the heightened ground clearance, I felt quite petit upon entering this orange and black beast. Once inside, you are enveloped by the orange and black leather trimmings and upholstery.  To further accentuate this stylish look: orange stitching on the black leather seats, steering wheel and gear lever. To further reinforce the brand, the seats are complemented by the orange “Athlete” embroidery.

The cabin has a clean design to optimise your driving experience and to minimise distraction. Space, comfort and luxury were key factors in the design with a 6.5-inch touch screen infotainment system which is USB, DVD, CD, Radio and Bluetooth compatible. This along with the cruise control can be accessed and controlled through the multifunctional steering wheel. To further boast Mitsubishi’s ability is an ultramodern, class-leading Super Select II four-wheel drive dial from where you can switch to any setting you desire.

Behind the modern leather steering wheel are shift paddles and an upgraded instrument display which shows you everything you need to know about your journey, the vehicle and the drive setting you’re in.

What differentiates this model with the original Triton, is that there are now seven airbags located in and around the car, ISOFIX in the back seats and a towing capacity of 3.1 tons! Safety features include ABS and EBD, Brake Assist, Active Stability and Traction Control and Hill-Start Assist. All you need to do is get in and start driving.

I was very impressed with the drive offered by the Athlete. Donovan didn’t take us off-roading this time, but we did enjoy a nice drive around town. This was fitting as it felt like I was driving an SUV the entire time. The ride is remarkably quiet for a diesel engine with absolutely no rattling or hassle as you drive.

As said by Mitsubishi, the Triton Athlete is a bakkie for the thrill-seeking buyer who craves luxury and adventure. To get your piece of the action, head over to Mitsubishi Motors East Rand today or speak to Dealer Principal, Kobus Jacobs; Sales Manager, Jaco Odendaal or Sales Executive, Donovan Pretorius.
