A compact SUV is regarded as a vehicle bigger than a small SUV, but smaller than a standard SUV. In my mind, the Toyota Rush passes as a standard SUV as it is way more spacious than a compact one. I recently had the pleasure of taking this new edition for a test drive with Imperial Toyota Kempton Park Sales Executive, Ivan van der Schyff.

This versatile SUV was designed to turn heads with its striking and energetic exterior features. With a front reminiscent of a Fortuner; other stylish exterior features include 17-inch alloy wheels, practical roof rails, LED headlamps and fog lights, a rear spoiler and power retractable side mirrors. Topping off these exciting features is the fact that Toyota used lightweight materials in its design to optimise fuel efficiency. An increased ground clearance of 220 millimeters allows for versatility and adventure.

The interior is totally kitted out with high quality finishes like a comfortable leather steering wheel, gear lever and chic instrument panel. The touchscreen infotainment system has standard satellite navigation and six speakers. Reverse camera and Park Distance Control helps you in any sticky parking situation. The dual-zone air-conditioning with chrome finishes inspire comfort while looking stylish too. The space is something to brag about with a 609-litre boot capacity and plentiful legroom in the first and second-row seats.

Providing piece of mind during those fun yet daunting road trips are the safety features provided by the Rush. ABS with Electronic Brake-force Distribution for stability and balance whilst Vehicle Stability Control prevents wheel slips and loss of traction. Hill-Assist Control prevents you from rolling back on those daring inclines. Driver, front passenger, side and curtain airbags will keep you and your passengers safe in case of an emergency. Toyota also designed the Rush’s body structure to absorb a lot of the impact. The rear seats have ISOFIX to ensure the safety of the little ones.

I was quite intrigued by the short dashboard as it enables optimal vision on the road. The seats are comfortable and adjustable to suit your every driving comfort.

Toyota specifically focus on fuel economy when designing their vehicles. The Rush is no different with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. Other convenient features include speed-sensing door locks, a full-sized spare wheel and smart entry. A smooth drive is enabled by the 5-point Multi-Link suspension.
