Toyota has introduced a host of brand-new Hilux derivatives in 2019 and today I get to take the all new Toyota Hilux Legend 50 for a drive. South African public’s appetite for Hilux bakkies has been impossible to satisfy for the last couple of years. And it’s for that reason that Toyota has introduced the new Hilux Legend 50. The Legend 50 celebrates 5 decades of the Hilux in South Africa.

Just standing outside and going through the detailing I am already impressed with the exterior design of this beast. The Legend 50 has smart entry and push button start function. The grille, which bears a Legend 50 badge is blacked out, has a gloss finish and is matched by foglamp surrounds. Along the side, the Legend 50 double-cab sports black side-protection mouldings, chrome finish side mirrors and door handles as well as black side steps and silver roof rails. Taking a look at the back, it comes with a black bumper and smoked-look tail lamps clusters. A tow bar is also fitted as a standard. It is quite the looker.

Minimal changes have been made to the Legend 50’s interior though. It now includes a black leather trim with blue detail stitching, a chrome accent strip across the dashboard and a glossy black panel trim. The infotainment system has been upgraded too; it now features an enlarged 8-inch flush mounted touchscreen display. And with the driver being able to operate everything from the steering wheel controls this makes the drive that much more enjoyable. This new infotainment system allows the driver to make use of its DVD, USB, Bluetooth and AUX inputs all in easy, user friendly and reachable access.

The Legend 50 is powered by a 2.8-litre GD-6 turbodiesel engine that produces peak outputs of 130 kW and 420 Nm and comes in a choice of six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission. The driving experience remains pleasantly unchanged and during our trip I can feel the power and torque of the Legend 50.

The Hilux has done enough to deserve its legendary status in the South African motoring industry and deserves to be celebrated. There is also no denying that the Hilux has been a massive success for Toyota. The Legend 50 will undoubtedly move in significant numbers as enthusiasts rush to get a hold of one of these iconic vehicles. The Toyota Hilux Legend 50 stands out from the crowd in a subtle yet stylish manner.

Be sure to pop into Imperial Toyota Kempton Park to witness the elegance and power of this astonishing new beast.
