In the motoring industry, two segments in particular are both competitive and popular; in the performance vehicle segment as well as the SUV segment, there are numerous vehicles that just stand out. None more so than the combination of these two defining characteristics, seen in vehicles such as the Jaguar E-Pace.

Madelein Kruger, who has been the Marketing Manager for high-profile brands Jaguar and Land Rover on the East Rand for many, many years, is the right person to go to when in comes to performance vehicles. Being ideally located in the industry to provide her expertise on the matter, Madelein ensures that superb quality vehicles are available to the public. With her charismatic personality and broad knowledge-base, Madelein’s specialty is in building relationships with people.

As a creative person and a lover of all things beautiful, I have always found resonance in the tagline Jaguar upholds: The Art of Performance. Hinting at the powerful, strong engines these vehicles house, as well as the creativity and almost sensual design base for the Jaguar fleet, the tagline is an excellent summary of what Jaguar stands for. I find this particularly relevant to the Compact SUV they have launched in the form of the beautiful new E-Pace.

Broad, muscular lines characterise the E-Pace, and the legendary “ready-to-pounce” look seems to be built into the very core of this vehicle. With an agile look (and the sexy, sleek lines of a sports car), the E-Pace seems like a spot-on combination of sedan and SUV. Distinctive LED taillights set this variant apart from any other, and add a touch of cheekiness.

The interior is classic Jaguar: classy leather-wrapped everything  highlighted by contrast stitching and a sporty grab-handle near the gear shift. The cockpit as a whole is driver-oriented and seems to almost wrap around you and bring all the dials within reach. The dashboard is elegantly laid out and is uncluttered, although with a definite modern look. A 10-inch touchscreen is the focal point of the dashboard, and it can seemingly do everything short of make you a cappuccino. My personal favourite touch is the numerous flexible stowage options, including the removable cupholders, which just highlight the manufacturer’s attention to detail.

In a vehicle such as this, there is no doubt that space is not a problem. Leg and headroom is ample throughout the cabin, and the boot expands generously when the back seats are flipped down. I love the panoramic sun roof that fills the cabin with ambient lighting or a sky full of stars: there is no other way to define this than noting that this is luxury at its premium.

“Jaguars roar” is one of the themes that run through the marketing campaign for this vehicle, and when looking at, and listening to, it’s engine, it makes perfect sense. Based on the renowned performance technology of the Jaguar brand, the Ingenium engine in the E-Pace indeed roars to life, producing an impressive 183 Kw and 350 Nm torque. Despite the powerful output, the engine is efficient and clean, and makes for a wonderfully reactive driving experience which Jaguar promises will be dynamic and intuitive, making the vehicle a literal extension of you as you drive.

The E-Pace handles without a hassle: it is poised and confident on all terrains, due to a fully independent suspension system that features sophisticated rear suspension arrangements and are designed to absorb bumps and jostles to increase your level of comfort in the cabin. With such features as Active Driveline and Adaptive Dynamics, the vehicle epitomises superb control and is bound to be a firm favourite amongst executives in South Africa.

Priced from R586 000, the E-Pace comes in the following different variants: The First Edition E-Pace, which boasts and exclusive design, 20-inch split spoke wheels with Satin Grey Diamond finish. The E-Pace S, which ads on enhanced technology such as Wifi Hotspots and Navigations Pro. The E-Pace HSE, with Windsor leather seats, enhanced with 18-way driver seat position memory, keyless entry and Gesture Tailgate (not to mention a 12-inch touchscreen). And also the E-Pace SE, featuring a bonus Drive Pack and Meridian Sound System.
