Lazarus Motor Company in Centurion has a rich heritage spanning over 60 years. The company represents five car manufacturers – Ford, Mazda, Kia, Land Rover and Jaguar. I recently had the utmost pleasure of taking the Ford Kuga 1.5 Ecoboost Trend Auto for a spin with Sales Consultant, Herman Roodt.
The exterior impresses from the very first glance. A trapezoidal chrome grille accentuates maturity while rear lights add to its solid stance. Contributing to its adventurous appeal are silver roof rails that come standard on all derivatives. The side mirrors automatic fold upon locking, with power adjustment and side indicators an added convenience and safety feature. The Trend is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels but can be tailored with 18-inch wheels as an option.
The lavish and spacious seats are standard in Torino leather. A 10-way adjustable driver’s seat allows one to enter with ease and drive in comfort. The dashboard is well assembled with air vents and accented curvatures that come together with the SYNC 3 Ford infotainment system, located in the center console. The SYNC 3 Ford infotainment system has Bluetooth and two USB ports merged into an eight-inch colour touchscreen.
You’re also treated to a digital driver display and leather multifunctional steering wheel for driving convenience. The Ford Ecoboost technology allows you to drive economically without feeling a lag in power. To make driving even more fun, they’ve included a six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission with paddle shifts. For added suitability, Ford removed the handbrake lever and instead incorporated the electronic handbrake. Another useful extra is Cruise Control with ASLD speed limiter – you also have the option of turning the original Cruise Control into Adaptive Cruise Control which then monitors and analyses your surroundings, adapting accelerating and braking accordingly.
Space is a big strength of the Kuga. Though it is not a seven-seater, you can still comfortably fit five people in the vehicle and have ample space left over for luggage. With the back-row seats in upright position, you have a boot capacity of 465-litres. Seats down, however, gives you a whopping 1653-litres of boot space!
I would recommend the Kuga for families with children or the more senior travelers who are looking for an SUV that has all the bells and whistles to travel safely. Ford has made special precaution in terms of safety in the Kuga. It has seven airbags (dual front, duel side, dual curtain and driver’s knee) and powered child locks. Drive-away locking is always a plus where safety is concerned.
Most modern vehicles come standard with ABS, as does the Kuga, but additional features Electronic Brake Distribution and Emergency Brake Assist. For optimal driving stability, it includes Electronic Stability Program with traction control to keep you stable in case of unreliable road conditions. Additional, you don’t need to worry about steadiness when towing a trailer as the Kuga has a Trailer Stability Function to keep the vehicle and whatever you’re towing on the straight and narrow.
Parking shouldn’t be a problem as a rear-view parking camera comes standard in all Kuga derivatives. Optional is the Active Park Assist which includes front parking sensors and a park slot.
