Sophisticated, best-in-class, supreme – words used to describe the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. Personally, I had always taken a particular fancy to Mitsubishi’s original Pajero short-wheel and long-wheel base vehicles, but never actually gave much attention to the Pajero Sport models. Well, that is until I came across the striking new shape with a refreshed tail light design. Sales Executive, Donovan Pretorius accompanied me on my recent joy ride with this SUV. And true to form, this was one exhilarating on-and off-road test drive.
What makes this beast so unique on the outside is its improved aerodynamics for enhanced stability and fuel efficiency. Features that are usually regarded as extra, come standard in the Pajero Sport 2.4 4WD. Roof rails, auto levelling LED driving lamps, daytime running lamps and headlamp washers are just a few to name. These features along with the energetic tail lights make this utility SUV both functional and luxurious!
At first glance, the Pajero Sport radiates confidence, a seemingly exciting vehicle to drive. An alluring front and spirited rear stimulate one to just get in, start the engine and drive!
The interior is just as muscular, yet luxurious as the exterior. Soft leather seats cushion your frame as you enter. A telescopic tilt leather steering wheel receives you with anticipation as your fingers curl around it in a gentle embrace. A snug arm rest ensures essential comfort as you prepare to gently, but purposefully tap the start button.
Though it has seven seats, the Pajero Sport offers ample driving and seating space. The two front seats are electrically adjustable for optimal driving experience. Adding to the space is the complete flattening of the third-row seats, extending the boot space from 193-litres to a whopping 813-litres.
Enhancing the already impressive list of features, the infotainment system provides you with Bluetooth connectivity, AM/FM radio transmission, USB and Aux connectivity – along with reverse camera and cruise control. All of which is accessible through the multi-functional steering wheel.
The 2.4-litre diesel engine ignited a roar of excitement within me. The fuel pedal was quite responsive and easily controlled. Take-off was swift and the gear changes in this automatic transmission was smooth, even for a diesel engine. I felt distinctively tough in the driver’s seat – it feels big, but comfortable to drive.
Moving swiftly towards a gravel road, we switch the 2WD dial to 4LLc 4WD – the changes in the chassis indicated on the drive computer. Mitsubishi incorporated electronic off-road assistance which supports gravel, mud, snow, sand or rocky conditions. Also, safety features such as Hill-Descent Control proves helpful when overcoming slopes. Though it was a short 4WD excursion, it certainly was both exciting and informative.
Together, the remarkable array of features and extras, plus price point are proof of the uttermost value-for-money these vehicles offer. And the metaphoric icing on the cake comes in the form of a 5-star ANCAP safety rating (on-and off-road), 3-year/100 000km manufacturer’s warranty, 5-year/90 000km service plan and service intervals of 10 000km.
