Peugeot has worked hard to erode perceptions of dubious reliability. And their recent batch of offerings appear well-built, with assuring warranties thrown into the mix for further peace of mind.

The 3008 arrived in 2010 and you’ll either love or hate the way it looks. Styling aside, its virtues of value and quality are hard to ignore. Hop inside and there’s almost a Teutonic air about its design and surface materials.

We found a 2012 example of the quirky spacious French car with under 20 000 kilometres on the odometer. Being the top-tier Executive model it benefits from a ton of standard gear. Features like adaptive cruise control, which you’d expect on serious German offerings, are part of the package.

There’s a navigation system; with a nifty slide-out screen and a head-up display which should give the soccer daddies some make-believe Top Gun thrills. It also has leather upholstery, Bluetooth, park distance control and a massive panoramic roof.

Its turbocharged diesel engine is mated to a smooth-shifting automatic transmission and the Peugeot offers a leisurely drive. Some lag is noticeable on take-off, but on the freeway with that mighty torque surge, there’s ample fizz for brisk overtaking.

It’s easy on the pocket too, with a real-world consumption with of around 7l/100km. You’ll pay around R900 to fill up its 60-litre tank. And there’s a lengthy balance of its standard service plan, which expires in October 2017 or at 100 000 kilometres.

Expect repayments of R4500, over 60 month with a 10% deposit – depending on the interest rate you qualify for of course. To replace one of its 16-inch Michelin tyres, you’ll pay in the region of R2700.

New, it cost R336 000 but 15 000 kilometres and one year later, you can fetch it for R250 000. That’s a considerable saving and if you’re after a safe, spacious and well-equipped family-mover, it deserves a serious look.
