I’m back at one of my favorite dealerships, Mazda Clearwater. After getting to test drive the Mazda CX-5 the last time, I’m curious to see what they have in store for me today. My test unit for the day is going to be the new Mazda 2 Dynamic 1.5.

Now this chic car is perfect for the everyday driver. The Mazda2 is the cheapest and smallest Mazda in this new range but that doesn’t it is at all dull. The Mazda2 is actually very far from it, it is smart yet still very funky looking. The Japanese went for a sexy, sporty look with this one and they got it right.

The new Mazda 2 is fully integrated into Mazda’s new corporate styling known as KODO-Soul of Motion. It features Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology which is an all-inclusive ism of redesigning their cats to be both environmentally friendly, efficient and a pleasure to drive.

Speaking of efficient, the Mazda 2 comes equipped with a 1.5-litre engine offering 82 kW and 145 Nm of torque. Mazda has stuck to its traditional 4-cylinder engines with this range and offers a six-speed automatic transmission-I was pleasantly surprised by this-as we got onto the freeway, I could feel exactly what this compact hatchback had to offer and was most satisfied. And with fuel consumption figures of just 5.5L/100 km on average, this means you will be saving quite a lot of money on fuel. A rather pleasant surprise.

The interior of the Mazda 2 is rather impressive. It boasts an interior as impressive as the exterior with fit and finish materials. A leather wrapped multi-function steering wheel as well as a leather gear knob and handbrake lever. The 1.5 Dynamic comes standard with air conditioning, push to start engine button, cruise control, front and rear electric windows, height and reach adjustable steering wheel and electric side mirrors. The Mazda 2 sports a 7-inch touch screen infotainment system that allows Bluetooth functionality, music streaming, internet radio integration, a six-speaker audio system and a total of 2 USB ports along with an AUX port. In terms of safety specifications, it offers driver and passenger airbags and ABS brakes with EBD.

Don’t be fooled by its compact stature, the Mazda 2 offers more than enough space. It  has 280 litres of luggage space and 60:0 split seats allowing for added flexibility. Now at first encounter with the Mazda CX-5, the Mazda 2 came as a complete surprise, but it turned out to be a pleasant one. The sexy hatchback has more than enough character and possesses a zippy yet very relaxing drive.
