Last month we brought you the exclusive pre-launch video report on the all-new Subaru WRX. Today the automaker announced the forthcoming arrival of the hotter STI version. But you had better act fast; only 30 units are allocated to South Africa for 2014. You will pay R599 000 which is exactly the same price as the outgoing model. The Marketing Manager at Subaru Southern Africa, Ashley Lazarus, explained that the vehicles are expected to sell out quickly.
Unlike its slightly tamer sibling which has experienced some downsizing, the STI still makes use of a 2.5-litre engine. Strapped with a turbocharger and armed with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive in typical hot Subaru fashion, it kicks out 221kW and 407Nm of torque. A driver-controlled limited-slip differential is also part of the package and so is electronic torque vectoring control.
According to Subaru, the new STI will offer unprecedented levels of grip, control and handling precision. There is only one model grade and as we have come to expect from the automaker, every conceivable creature comfort is standard. This also comes with a traditional six-speed manual transmission, but there is no Lineartronic CVT on offer. As with the rest of the line-up, a three-year/75 000-kilometre maintenance plan and three-year/100 000-kilometre warranty is standard.
