Introducing the new GWM P-Series – launched at the ADA Training and Outdoor Centre in Hartebeespoort.

On the outside, the P-Series design contours are reminiscent of a Ford F-150 and a Dodge Ram – yet authentically unique. GMW have launched both a commercial, SX, DLX and passenger LS, (Luxury Special), LT, (Luxury Tourer) series range – available in a variety of drivetrain and cabin configurations. Every part of the P-Series has been meticulously etched-out: when GWM decided to launch the P-Series, they set their sights on the “heavy-weight division,” not just to compete but with the intention to vanquish – transmuted by the P-Series distinguished front-grille: a design inspired by the UFC Championship Belt and Panther eye design head-lights. And in this division size does matter – standing face-to-face with both the Ford Ranger and Volkswagen Amarok.

By incorporating European engineering into their vehicles – the P-Series in particular – GWM have closed the gap on the competition and set-up for themselves their own niche in the market of which they now call home. The passenger LS/LT version is extremely comfortable to drive, while the quality of the commercial bakkie’s cabin is even better than the interior of some passenger bakkies presently on the market – drawing compliments from my vertically gifted passengers, 6’2” tall, who were impressed with the SX P-Series double-cab rear-legroom. However, the LT model demonstrates a higher-level of cabin comfort, driver-centricity and ergonomic decadence. The yacht-style gear-lever certainly gives the impression of captaining a luxury yacht – heated leather-seats, a 23cm High-def’ touchscreen infotainment system with AppleCarPlay, Android Auto, wireless cellphone charging, a 21cm LCD virtual driver-display, retro-styled multifunction steering-wheel, dashcam socket-adapter, seven airbags and key-fob remote engine-start. Although my time behind the wheel was brief, the P-Series took every opportunity to show-off, in between driver changes along our route, we had to activate the hazard-lights, slow-down and pull-over which automatically engaged the 360° camera-view system: a high-definition peripheral and aerial view of the vehicle’s position. Power from the 120kw, 2.0l turbodiesel engine is more than sufficient, with 400nm of low-end torque delivered via a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission through a Borg Warner Torque-on-demand Intelligent all-wheel-drive system offers ample open-road acceleration: gear-shifts are seamless and precise. With the added bonus of three different driver-mode settings – Standard, Eco and Sport. Like in most instances, bakkie-buyers do not necessarily buy a 4×4 for its intended purpose – to go off-road. Therefore, the LT 4×4 is fitted with normal road-going tyres, 265/60/R18, in which case I cannot say too much about its off-road capabilities – except that it is capable. As demonstrated at the ADA Training Centre, along the artificial obstacle course which presented little, if no, challenge for the P-Series nor to the DLX single-cab 4×4. The only thing I can draw from my experience at ADA is that it offered a mere glimpse into what the P-Series can do especially if and when the P-Series becomes available with All-terrain off-road tyres. Which according to Darren Pillay, GWM SA’s Product Planning Manager, for those off-road weekend warriors – GWM will have a list of preferred suppliers of off-road accessories as not to interfere with their warranty.

Beyond a shadow of a doubt the P-Series LT 4×4 double-cab is the most sophisticated leisure pick-up on the market possessing highly advanced onboard technology and intelligent safety driver-aids which not only pins it as the division leader or the most unprecedented rival in the South African bakkie segment but globally as one of the most futuristic vehicles. For example, self-adaptive cruise-and-curve control, stop-start traffic queuing, automatic emergency-braking pedestrian collision avoidance, traffic-sign recognition, terrain topography, adjacent-lane/blind-spot monitoring with active lane-keep assist and self-park – semi-autonomous functionality not yet seen on some high-end luxury saloons.

As mentioned previously, the P-Series bakkie is available in a variety of drivetrain and cabin configurations divided further into a commercial and passenger division.
