More About The Toyota RunX

The Toyota RunX has always been the sporty alternative to the bigger and conservative looking Corolla. As a hatchback, it has a youthful yet mature appearance, and it's not every day that the hatch variant of a vehicle looks as good as the RunX does.

There are many reasons why one would want to buy a Toyota RunX, for starters, the Japanese brand is renowned for its reliability and producing vehicles that often outlive their owners. If reliability is at the top of your list, you can tick that off immediately. Although the RunX was launched nearly two decades ago here in South Africa, it's still an attractive looking vehicle and many of them are still running today.

The engine options range from a 1.4-litre petrol - this is the go-to variant if fuel economy is what you need from a vehicle. Next is an engine which is the perfect middle ground, a 1.6-litre petrol. This is generally the displacement people opt for regardless of the vehicle brand or model. Finally, there's a 1.8-litre variant which is the biggest in the RunX range and is only available in the sporty RSi trim level. By the way, you can choose between five trims: R, RT, RS, RX and the top-spec RSi which we've already mentioned. In the 1.4 and 1.6 engine variants, Toyota installed a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 1.8 was given an additional cog making it a six-speed manual. Regardless of the engine size or spec level you choose, a RunX comes with aircon for those scorching summer days when rolling down the windows just isn't enough, an audio system with CD player, and of course a trip computer to monitor your mileage as well as fuel consumption. ABS, airbags, electric windows and mirrors are all features you'll find from the RS trim upwards.

Despite being a smaller version of the Corolla, the Toyota RunX can still happily function as a family car and a stylish one at that. It boasts a reasonably spacious interior with enough leg and shoulder room for its occupants, tall front seat passengers may find that the seat doesn't go back enough for a full stretch. Boot space may not be the largest in its class, but thankfully that rear seat does fold to provide additional room and allowing you to load larger items.
