The Toyota Yaris was launched in South Africa in 2005. It became a top-seller for the Japanese marque but has recently been discontinued and replaced by the GR Yaris (currently the only Yaris on sale in SA).
The local market got the second-generation model which were marketed between 2005 and 2013 with three- and five-door hatchback and four-door sedan body styles offered. The car is one of the fastest selling cars on the used or pre-owned car market in SA. This reveals how much South Africans love this little sub-compact car.
The GR is a sports car developed directly from Toyota's championship-winning World Rally experience; the GR Yaris was designed with performance-driven individuals in mind. It sports a 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine and a GR-Four all-wheel drive system.
In 2017, the limited-edition Toyota Yaris GRMN was launched to only 400 lucky buyers. This little beast was powered by a supercharged 1.8-litre engine and had a top speed of 230 km/h. In 2017, the Toyota Yaris Pulse was introduced. The final version of the Yaris was launched locally in 2018. It didn't have that instantly recognisable Yaris look, but the car was a bit bigger in body and capacity.
