More About The Range Rover
The Land Rover Range Rover has been around since 1970. Land Rover's luxury SUV and is currently in its fifth generation. Many upgrades and face-lifts have been designed over the past 5 decades. The first generation very much resembled the first Discovery look and feel and gradually evolved to the very sleek and luxurious Range Rover L405.
In the second-hand car market, the models mostly in circulation are the third to the fourth generation. First-generation Range Rovers are scarce and considered a "classic car" and for the classic car enthusiasts.
The second-generation Land Rover Range Rovers (1994 - 2002 models), P38A, is still out on the South African roads and was the last of the angular boxed shaped models and the first to introduce electronic diesel injection due to the BMW ownership of Land Rover in that period. Available only in Diesel the following configurations where manufactured: 4 liter V8, 4.5 liters V8 and the 2,6 turbo diesel. The boxy 5 door station wagon-like exterior offered a roomy interior with more trim options and creature comforts that at the time classified this model as luxury SUV.
The more popular generations are however the third and fourth generation. With Jaguar ownership seeping through in technology and design, the Range Rover catapulted into the upmarket section of luxury SUV.
The L322 manufactured early 2000's evolved with a sleeker exterior, prominent grille, re-designed wheels and exterior fittings enhancing the overall feeling of luxury and style. Interior was also upgraded significantly with a plush interior, leather optional and black piano or wood-paneling depending on the trim level. Dashboard controls were designed with function and aesthetics in mind and fiber optics and Bluetooth where introduced.
Performance-wise, depending on the engine configuration and general state of the vehicle, you can expect fuel consumption of around 11.5 - 12,5 liters per kilometer.
The fourth-generation (L405), is a familiar sight on South African roads and this generation manufactured from 2012 offers a luxury SUV with all the bells and whistles a driver or passenger could wish. It is one of the most popular in the world, with international sales proving its popularity.
The external design is fluid with a prominent grille, chrome details and unmistakable Land Rover design language with an even more sophisticated face-lift in 2018. The later models in this generation also offer hybrid vehicles. The interior is plush and elegant with a full infotainment system befitting its luxury status. The latest Land Rover Range Rover competes with Mercedes, BMW, and Audi instead of 4x4's. It is doubtful if any owner of this luxury SUV will take it to the 4x4 course, but if they do, they will find it is still one of the most maneuverable and agile 4x4's out there. With updated technology and hybrids available, fuel consumption is better than its predecessor with around an estimated highway consumption of 12km per liter on the non-hybrid 3litre V6
