Land Rover Discovery car for sale first generation was launched in 1989 and was Land Rover’s offer in the mid-size luxury SUV class. The 1980’s tall, boxy shape is an iconic one on South African roads and this model was manufactured until 1998 when the updated Land Rover Discovery Ii was launched.

The first generation model derived many elements form the more high-end range Rover, including the chassis, four-wheel drive, and suspension designs. The first models were available in 3-door configuration but the manufacturer soon upgraded to a 5-door vehicle. At the time of its launch, the used Land Rover Discovery for sale was strong competition in the market due to its pricing, brand and engine configuration. It was at that stage also the only Land Rover vehicle offering a 4-cylinder petrol engine.

The upright, long-wheelbase design won critical acclaim as the British Design Award winner in 1898. Slightly smoother lines that its hard-working cousin the Defender with body paint that underscores the “luxury class”, high roof and good visibility all round, proved popular with the market segment. It was the first vehicle that combined Land Rover rugged capability with a more sophisticated and comfortable option. The interior was completely re-designed and does not bear any resemblance to any preceding Land Rover. The design was aimed at the lifestyle sector, a comfortable recreational vehicle with a spacious cabin and luxury amenities such as magazine holders, rear-seat hand-rests, sunroof panels, fabric storage space and branded cloth interior. Seats could be configured in the traditional two-row set-up or with two jump seats in the cargo area.

An upgrade to the first generation model was released in 1992 including improvements including an automatic gearbox on the 200Tdi, new colour range, and the upper trim level alloy wheels, front driving lights, and roof bars. A two-seater 3-door was also released and earning fame as the SVO or Special Vehicles Operations.

Engine configurations in the first generation Land Rover Discovery pre-1998 re-launch as Land Rover Discovery Ii offered a 2liter T-series (petrol) or the 2.5litre diesel in 200Tdi and 300Tdi and before the Ii only available in permanent 4 wheel drive and automatic transmission, with high- and low-range and central dif-lock.

Average fuel consumption for the petrol is recorded for combined use at 16,3 – 16,4 liters per 100km and the diesel at an average 9liters per 100km. The most economical is the petrol V81 at 16,4 liters per 100km and the diesel model that performs best is the 300Tdi at 8,4litres per 100km.

Off-road capability is what would be expected of Land Rover, even with the tall body and long wheelbase. Fans of the Landy is of an opinion that the most reliable Land Rover is the Discovery manufactured between 1996 and 2002, which includes the last of the first generation.
