Nissan Almera for Sale

The first-generation four-door Nissan Almera was launched in 1995 as a replacement to the Nissan Sunny and Pulsar. Later generations saw subtle facelifts still offering an affordable family car and an acceptable drive.

The most seen generation on South African roads must be the 2000-2007 second-generation model. The sedan's exterior was slightly revamped and competed well with other vehicles in the compact sedan class, riding on the Nissan brand of dependability.

The second-generation exterior is smooth and pragmatic with a slightly more pronounced front grille, sloping roofline, and black matte design detail. The interior is fabric and hard plastic, durability in mind rather than a luxury. It is spacious and functional. The petrol model is more general on South African roads and the best performance and economy is by the 1,8, 16 valve model (second-generation 2000 – 2007). The top speed is around 187km per hour and acceleration 10.8 seconds from 0 to 100 km. The fuel economy is around 10.4 litres per 100km in the city and 6liters per 100km for highway consumption. The engine is turbocharged and performs adequately although not nippy at 114bhp at 5600 revs per minute, enough power for a comfortable and safe drive.

The third generation (2011 onwards) sees more fluid lines, a sloping roof, a new front grille design, and a higher boot. It looks more pronounced than its predecessors but is still described as the hatchback Micra’s sedan sibling. The Japanese manufacturer stays true to its brand of durability and affordability rather than being splashy and cutting edge. The outside design does tend to look more aerodynamic with a boot spoiler and large wrap-around halogen headlights although it has been widely criticised. The third generation Almera is a subdued combination of acceptable performance and reliability.

The interior is exceptionally roomy and comfortable and can easily seat 5 adults, although slightly less headroom in the back due to the sloping roofline. Finishes are fabric and hard plastic with chrome inserts and the dashboard and controls are Spartan and functional. Luggage space is generous with a 490-litre capacity. Technology is as conservative as the interior design. With a multi-functional computer that combines fuel consumption, driving range and service reminders it is basic compared to what is on offer in other models of the same generation. Bluetooth connectivity and steering wheel audio controls with MP3 player, auxiliary plug as well as driver-assist in the rear and climate control is on offer. To complete the pragmatic package is keyless entry and a push-button start to add to the convenience.

The third generation Almera performs acceptably on flat roads, struggling slightly with more challenging up-hills on higher gear settings. It does, however, provide a comfortable relatively quiet ride. Best consumption and performance from the automatic giving 6.3liters per 100 km.
