Nissan Hardbody for Sale

The Nissan Hardbody epitomizes the compact bakkie and is perhaps one of the best examples of this Japanese manufacturer's work-horse durability with a history that goes back to 1934. The Hardbody all but reached icon status in South Africa due to the marketing campaign and subsequent proof of its name. The successor of the Datsun 6241 and predecessor of the Nissan Navara and now the Nissan NP300 is legendary as a durable, rugged and capable vehicle on any terrain. Plus, the Hardbody is manufactured locally at the Nissan plant in Rosslyn, Tshwane.

Available in a single and double cab the external design has been slightly updated with younger models from less boxy to more fluid lines, updated grille designs, roller bars, and sidebars. But let's be honest, when you buy a Hardbody it is not for the looks, it is for performance and durability. Interior is Spartan at best, with older models still sporting vinyl seats, accommodating mud, water, and all the other grime a hardworking bakkie needs to withstand. The latest Hardbody NP300 is available with more creature comforts, as compact bakkies are now not only an option as work vehicles but also for over landing trips and weekend 4x4 owners.

On the second-hand market, there is a broad spectrum of models and the fuel efficiency and specs depend on the model and the year. The spectrum ranges from no-frills workhorses to almost-cross-over double cabs, especially models after 2006. Electric windows, air conditioning, sound system, and leather/cloth combination upholstery makes the later Hardbody models more appealing to weekenders and overlanders.

All-wheel drive capability has been noted to put some of its rivals to shame, handling grade 3 inclines with ease, navigating various surfaces with ease. The strong 2.4 16Valve engine is powerful with enough output to handle heavy loads, tow with ease and drive challenging terrain with ease, this from an older 2004 model.

The Hardbody was not designed with speed, fuel efficiency or comfort in mind. As the name suggests, this vehicle should be able to do the job every time. The cruising speed for the 2004 model is about 120km per hour on a flat road. Diesel models the more favourable option, keeping in mind that these bakkies were designed for power and hard work, not speed and economy. Top speed for the 2006 3000 TD D/C 4x4 diesel was recorded at 159km per hour and fuel consumption at 11 litres/100. If power and durability is something you are looking for in a bakkie, the Hardbody is a strong contender.
