More About The Fiat 500

This Italian icon dates back to 1957 when it was first launched as a city car and lovingly known as ‘The Cinquecento’. Fast forward to 2007 and the Fiat 500 is reimagined and relaunched as the powerful beauty we know today. The trend of reimagined classics has proved popular with other classics like the VW Beetle and Mini giving drivers that retro flair.

The modern Fiat 500 is based on the chassis of the Fiat Panda and uses some of its most loved features like the centre dashboard and gearshift lever. By 2012 one million of these beauties had been produced. Fiat credits its popularity (among other compelling attributes) the 500 000 personalisation options!

2016 models received a facelift which featured more than just cosmetic enhancements. Optional Xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, dual-bar top grille, lower chrome bumper trim and updated customisation options were added to an already superb offering. The interior was reinvigorated with upmarket materials and a unique dashboard. Connectivity is a must for the modern driver and Fiat’s ‘Uconnect’ infotainment concept includes six speakers, and a USB/AUX and Bluetooth connection.

But before we get carried away with the aesthetic appeal of this car, let’s look at the number one reason people love this vehicle: PERFORMANCE. The naturally aspirated 81 kW 1,6-litre petrol engine teams up with a manual transmission and front-wheel drive. From 2018 onwards, the Fiat 500 features three MultiJet II turbodiesel engines in 1,3-, 1,6- and 2,0-litre options.

In terms of safety, this little car packs a punch: 7 airbags, ABS, Hill Assist and Electronic Stability Control.

The Fiat 500 is relatively affordable when it comes to maintenance and repairs but it is advisable to only allow professional, certified operatives to service your vehicle to ensure that it comes back to you in showroom condition. Look for genuine Mopar or equivalent spare parts which are designed to guarantee the reliability and efficiency of a Fiat.
