The Kia Cerato car is a compact car manufactured from 2003-2008. Available in five-door hatchback or a four-door sedan, it is the predecessor of the Kia Forte car which is the current offering in this class by the South Korean manufacturer, although, in South Africa, it is still marketed as the pre owned Cerato. Currently, in its fourth generation, this compact car has evolved as the Kia brand matures and offers a surprising combination of style, ability, and affordability.
The external design has stayed consistent with the original look and feel of smooth curves and luxury feel, although updated with each generation and with the younger models offering an impressive silhouette on the road. Younger models have even more pronounced curves, with a shorter, rounder nose prominent grille giving it a slightly aggressive, sporty look. From the first generation to the more recent, body detail has become less pronounced and more minimalist, adding to a feeling of luxury.
Cabin design has also been updated with every generation, now qualifying for premium status with quality and luxury finishes, depending on the year model and trim level. Cerato is competing in on the higher end of the market, offering, if not a cheap, but affordable alternative to its rivals.
The driving position is excellent; instrument panel and details are demure and tasteful with comfortable seats. The entry-level trim comes standard with six airbags, air-conditioning, adjustable driver's seat, and steering wheel-mounted controls. The upper trim levels have a range of extras including reverse assist camera and infotainment units. Space is adequate, considering it is a compact car. The hatchback has adequate space in the backseat and the cargo space as one would expect from a hatch, the four-door sedan more suitable for a small family.
Handling is acceptable but not as sharp as some of its rivals, low cabin noise, and depending on the variant you choose, the power might be either a bit disappointing (1,6liter) or just right. Again, depending on body shape and year model.
Fuel consumption is recorded for the 1,6litre at around 7,5 litres per 100km for city use and 5,5litres per 100km on the highway.
