Volkswagen Passat is a large family car that has been manufactured since 1973. Since the 70’s the manufacturer has released eight generations, the latest released in 2011 and manufactured to 2019 is a completely different car than the first models. Elegance understated luxury and absolute dependability have evolved from a boxy car that was associated with road trips and large families.

Generations between 1993 and 2001 largely resembled a bigger version of the Jetta models of the same generations with the option of a 4-door sedan or station wagon. The second hand Passat that is most readily common on the South African market is the B6 and B7, manufactured between 2001 and 2015.

The elegant but minimalist style that is present in the Jetta’s of the same generation is continuous but the Volkswagen Passat is visibly a presence on the road. Once again Volkswagen opted for understated elegance bordering on pragmatic yet stylish. The curves are smooth, chrome details demure and give an overall feeling of competence and aerodynamics endeavours to make the Passat more competitive in its class.

The B7 (2011 – 2015) sports several upmarket improvements, including thicker windows and sound dampening interior that provides for a quiet ride, stop-start buttons, and eco-conscious options.

The interior is roomy and stylish. Controls and displays where you would expect them, echoing other Volkswagen models, seats and steering column are adjustable and seats are wide and comfortable. Space is ample and depending on the configuration of a four-door or five-door, the boot space is also ample, with the station wagon you have the added option of folding the backseat down for easy loading. Interior trims are of quality although hardy enough to withstand family use. The displays and infotainment are pragmatic rather than luxurious. All trim levels were issued with all models get air-con, a CD player, Isofix child seat mounting points, electric windows, heated mirrors, and remote central locking. Optional extra's in higher trim levels include electrically adjustable driver seat, speed control, alloy wheels, and upgraded sound systems, leather seats, satellite navigation, and touch screen infotainment.

Performance-wise, despite the diesel emissions scandal, Volkswagen still retains the image of quality and reliability. The Passat B7 is available in petrol and diesel, with the best fuel economy recorded by the 1,6litre diesel at almost 28 kilometres per litre. 21litres, taking into consideration the sheer size of the vehicle. The diesel generally also noted as the most reliable engine.
