More About Jeep
The inspiration and genesis of the name Jeep may surprise you. The original model-designation was called the Bantam BRC-40, (Bantam Reconnaissance Car). And the first prototype was designed by Karl Probst, an automotive engineer, who was hired by Bantam Car Company in July of 1940 for the U.S Military during WWII. Shortly thereafter, the military also commissioned Ford and Willys-Overland to submit their prototype models for testing, but based on Karl Probst’s BRC-40 blueprint design. It was during the test-phase that soldiers nicknamed it, “Jeep” – because it reminded them of the cartoon character, Eugene the Jeep, from the animated series Popeye and Olive.
How much is a Jeep in South Africa?
Jeep cars are available for sale in South Africa in a number of trim levels starting from under R70,000 for an older model with prices dependent on year of manufacture, mileage, service history and vehicle specification. Prices are better for base and mid-point models but with a number of variants available, higher-spec Jeep cars can retail for more than R600 000.
Is a Jeep a reliable car?
In spite of their passion for the Jeep brand, Jeep enthusiasts have mixed emotions surrounding a Jeep’s reliability! But in what context? Many Jeep owners play hard with their Jeeps and show little mechanical sympathy – that if continued unabated, pushing the vehicle beyond its limit, will result in a breakdown. Therefore, if the service book is not up-to-date, or if there is a hint of abuse, “despite the low sticker-price,” you might need to wait until you can afford a much newer used Jeep model with low-mileage.
What makes a Jeep worth the money?
This is a question that can only be answered with another simple question: “where do you want to go with your Jeep?” This is the first, and perhaps the only thing that matters; whether you plan to mount pavements at the mall or scale a steep rock-face: your purchase should be model-specific
Is a Jeep expensive to service and repair?
Without a doubt, specific to South Africa, a Jeep is expensive to both service and repair. It is a fully-imported vehicle: therefore, some parts are more expensive than others and are not always available. It is in your best interest to buy a used Jeep that boasts the balance of its maintenance plan – otherwise purchase an extended service plan. FCA dealerships charge more for services but there are Jeep agents and Jeep licensed service centers countrywide.
